Key takeaways

  • Fat loss comes from eating a little less energy than you burn, consistently.
  • A safe, sustainable pace is roughly 0.5–1% of body weight per week.
  • Protein, strength training and sleep protect muscle while you lose fat.

Every month there is a new tea, a new pill or a new 'miracle' diet. They sell because they promise speed. They fail because they ignore one simple fact: to lose fat, you need to eat slightly less energy than your body uses, for a long time. Everything else is a tool to make that easier.

The deficit, explained simply

Your body burns energy all day: to keep you alive, to digest food and to move. When you eat less than that, your body uses stored energy, including fat. A moderate deficit is enough. Going too hard leaves you hungry, tired and likely to give up.

Protein is your best friend

Protein keeps you fuller for longer and helps you hold on to muscle while you lose fat. Include a good source at every meal: eggs, fish, chicken, beans, lentils, turkey or Greek yoghurt.

Lift, don't just sweat

Cardio burns energy, but strength training tells your body to keep its muscle. People who lose weight without strength training often lose a lot of muscle too, and end up 'smaller but softer'. Two to three strength sessions a week makes a real difference to how you look and feel.

Move more outside the gym

The hour you train matters, but so do the other 23. Walking, taking stairs, doing chores and standing more add up to a large share of the energy you burn each day. See our guide on walking for fat loss.

Why the scale goes up and down

Your weight can change by a kilogram or more from day to day because of water, salt, carbohydrates and digestion. That's not fat. Weigh yourself at the same time each morning and look at the weekly average, not single days.

What to avoid

  • Detox teas and 'slimming' products: most work by making you lose water, not fat.
  • Skipping meals all day and overeating at night.
  • Cutting out whole food groups unless a doctor advises it.
  • Very-low-calorie diets without medical supervision.

Keeping it off

The habits that got you there are the habits that keep you there: regular training, protein at each meal, plenty of vegetables, fewer sugary drinks, good sleep, and a plan for weekends and parties. When you reach your goal, increase your food slowly and keep training.

Frequently asked questions

How fast should I lose weight?

Around 0.5–1% of body weight per week is a safe, sustainable rate for most people. Faster loss usually means more muscle loss and a higher chance of regaining it.

Do slimming teas work?

Most 'slimming' or 'detox' teas cause water loss, often through a laxative effect. The weight returns when you stop. They do not burn fat.

Can I lose belly fat only?

You can't choose where you lose fat. A consistent calorie deficit, strength training and good sleep reduce overall body fat, including around the belly.
